Aladine’s rug

Shulli Goitein

Extreme-pointed tongue-in-cheek antique kilim rug and cotton fringe ‘rolled carpet’ heel with cork and rubber sole, 1993.

Third year student project in Bezalel. The first year footwear design was introduced into the Jewelry department which then changed into jewelry and fashion Dpt. The requirements were to create a shoe inspired by a children’s tale and then make a second futuristic interpretation to the first shoe. Goitein: ‘When I went to the flea market searching for an antique rug for this project, the Persian merchants rolled out rugs for me to show me their goods. This gave me the idea of using the unrolling gesture of the rug as the inspiration for the shoe, so the heel is rolled up revealing the beauty of the rug in the rest of the shoe.’
