Origin and Awe

Hand-knitted fabric pointed boots with a futuristic casted steel heels, 2025.

Inspired by the film Annihilation, ‘Origin and Awe’ explores the themes of ‘complete destruction’ and ‘rebirth’, while also incorporating the fantasy of advanced extraterrestrial life. Drawing from China’s ancient Yangshao Banpo culture, which dates back approximately 6.000 years, the project delves into the origins of humanity and the similarities between land and sea life. The design aims to immerse both the viewer and wearer in the experience of mimicking the genetic traits of fish, encouraging contemplation of the mysterious relationship between humans and fish. By doing so, it seeks to deepen our understanding of the origin of all things, the cycle of life, and cultural heritage, while celebrating humanity’s shared fascination with the profound mysteries of existence.

In terms of footwear design, the project draws inspiration from the genetic traits of fish. The uppers are made from a hand-knitted fabric crafted by avant-garde fashion designer Taro (Ziyu Ma), resembling a fantastical textile that emerged from genetic mutations. Every thread vibrates with the rhythm of life. The design of the toe is inspired by the mouth shape of a filefish, with its subtle, organic curves that evoke both elegance and a mysterious futuristic feel. The heel takes its shape from the negative space between fish totems and shoes, deconstructing this delicate relationship. It serves not just as a support structure, but as a sculptural presence. The entire footwear collection is an exploration of fantasy, biology, surrealism, the unknown, and aesthetics.
