Walking on Water – May 21 & 22
Walking on Water is the performance and installation project of the English fashion designer Jo Cope, created in collaboration with the Piedàterre Venetia brand, specialist in fur-lane, the original velvet shoes that from Venice have spread all over the world. Part of the Venice Design Biennial, 20 May 2021 – 27 Jun 2021.
On May 21 & 22, the terrace of the MyFondaco, a breath-taking stage jutting out over the water of the Grand Canal, will be the place where the project comes to life, combining the choreographed movements of four dancers, the ancient gestures of a shoe craftswoman and the powerful voice of soprano Lieta Naccari. Through the action of walking and the shoe as a means of expression, the designer investigates nowadays female condition in relation to the stories and paths of the women of the past, who preceded her.

About the artist
Jo Cope is an artist using shoes as vessels to talk about notions of being human, her hand crafted metaphorical artworks explore clothing as an extension of the self.
Drawing from aspects of philosophy, psychology, historical research, social observations and life experiences, her pieces exist both with and without the body and can be presented as static objects, larger installations, live performances and as tools for social activism. Since 2006 she has worked on a diverse range of commissions and exhibits which push the formal boundaries of fashion questioning its evolving role within art and society.
