Footspace

Rachel Chang

Part of the collection Footspace, in collaboration with Weilong Xie, 2013.

The collection explores heel form and focuses on engineering framework to fit the space around the foot. The shapes and lines are inspired by the skeletal structure of human bones as well as architectural space frameworks. I think footwear is a human support structure.

Inspired by furniture design and manufacturing process in the 50s, each shoe’s construction is integral with the design by using the principles of the slotting system that is found in furniture and engineering. This makes it have great balance and strong support.I had looked into the structure of bridges, and a lot of different chairs to understand how a structure needs to be balanced. After I analysed the structure, I applied it to this shoe.

Material: maple wood, metal and 3D printing.
