Oey Tjeng Sit

The Amsterdam pharmacist-artist (1917-1987) opened his ‘Pharmacy Oey’ at Prinsengracht 128, opposite the Westertoren in Amsterdam. From here Oey ‘the dragon man with a passion for Dada’ started with his ‘Oey window art gallery’. The purpose invited artists brought the art outside the circuit of galleries and museums.

The work of autodidact Oey is characterized by great artistic versatility, after a period of surrealist painting and drawing, he focused on the lino technique, collage and book publishing. In his collages (often with Indian ink and brush) and installations he frequently uses newspapers which inspired to him to combine ethereal with actuality.
