Japanese contemporary artist Noritaka Tatehana graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in dyeing and weaving. Guided by his concept ‘Rethink’, he creates works that reexamine Japanese cultural traditions and craft techniques through a contemporary lens. His signature work, Heel-less shoes, inspired by Takageta (tall wooden clogs associated with Oiran (high-ranking courtesans) became widely known after being worn by the American singer Lady Gaga. His works are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and Museu do Calçado, São João da Madeira, Portugal.
