Deadstock

Pointed wedge boots made from recycled shoes in cooperation with Tenant of Culture, 2018.

Tenant of Culture is the artistic practice of Dutch visual artist and RCA graduate Hendrickje Schimmel, who lives and works in London, UK. Schimmel operates in the space between sculpture and couture; her objects are assembled at the fast pace of fashion production, yet these garments are clearly not factory-made.

Her work is a play on contradictions, sustainability and wasteful fashion, archive and trend, sculpture and clothing. She explores sustainability in fashion through unique pieces, giving them a new dimension of life, use, and visibility from a previously undiscovered perspective.

During her year long Sarabande scholarship in 2018, which she concluded with the Deadstock exhibition at the Hackney studio, she collaborated with shoe designer Marko Baković. Together, they created cowboy boots from upcycled moccasins and derbies, leather jackets revealing patchworks of vintage handbags.
