LOOP Charles Bergmans

For Charles Bergmans, a shoe has never been merely a functional object. It is a small, complex product in which people, the body, movement and technology come together.
Curiosity is always the starting point. Not how a shoe should look, but what becomes possible when you dare to look again at something everyone thinks they already know.

The book LOOP (expected on November 12 2026) now puts Charles Bergmans’s six-decade oeuvre in the spotlight, revealing the connections between design, craftsmanship and family heritage. From the legacy of créateur Koos Bergmans to the present generation of family members. Bergmans designs from the last. “The magical last determines the character, fit and comfort of the shoe,” he says. Frills and embellishments are not his style; he does not design for Lady Gaga on the red carpet, but creates distinctive, timeless and innovative ‘Dutch designs’ for all of us.

As a pioneering freelance designer with his own studio, Bergmans made his way in a rapidly changing footwear industry. Driven by a passion for innovation, he built an internationally successful career, designing for brands such as Clarks, Ecco, Sioux, Wolky and his own label, Terra Plana.

This richly illustrated retrospective paints a portrait of an era of design, craftsmanship, innovation, experimentation and artistic development. It opens up cultural and craft heritage and makes design processes accessible to a broad audience.
