Maria Tesselschade

René van den Berg

Van den Berg’s challenging commission was creating a replica of a pair of shoes that belonged to Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher (25 March 1594 – 20 June 1649), a Dutch poet and engraver, 2018.

The original shoe was found after a terrible fire, on New Years Eve 2015, that burned the building of Waardijk Schoenen in Alkmaar, the Netherlands complitely down to the ground. Archeological research on the site revealed glass engravings, a diamant ring and a shoe, that must have belonged to Maria Tesselschade, who had lived there more than 400 years ago.

Commissionned by Bert Waardijk, photo’s René van den Berg.
