They are a 'graft' between a stripper shoe and an all star converse. The clash between these two elements is extremely interesting: the defined design of the stripper shoe in opaque resin (which I've modified by cutting the heel and the front part) and the all star converse, dirty and worn out.

The combination of these two elements create an unique work: a sculpture-shoe to wear or to keep in a reliquary. 'Golden Girl Fashionista' necklace

Designed by Atelier Ted Noten in collaboration with WALLPAPER*

The ‘Golden Girl Fashionista’ is designed for the collector, whereby he can compose his own necklace by choosing the different elements that will be accented in gold.

The ‘Golden Girl Fashionista’, a unique piece, is to be first shown at the Salone del Mobile in Milan by Wallpaper*, and will have one accent: a 18 krt golden gun.

Called Mojito, the design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball.

The foot naturally forms a bridge between the two.

The product is made of carbon fibre, laminated with rubber on the side that touches the floor and leather on the side next to the skin.

Julian Hakes: 'One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general.

I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels.

When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball.

With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.

The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist.

So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?

So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.

With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot.

The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.

The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle.

This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin.

The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.

We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.'

She is a Dutch fashion designer who is currently graduating from her master degree at the Fashion Institute Arnhem (FIA). In collaboration with Freedom of Creation she developed a shoe which is printed 3 Dimensional. With her latest collection Pauline explores the void between a body and a garment and searched for materials that could emphasize this space. By making shapes like capsules that twist and float around the body, she created clothes like organic sculptures. The form language of the graduation collection has also been applied into the shoe design, creating a.sculptural form with organic, intertwining lines. The shoes have been further developed in collaboration with Janne Kyttanen into functional high fashion. As a result of the technology, Pauline was able to created without any borders, everything was possible! The polyamide shoes, made with 3D printing, give a futuristic look and feel to the overall collection. Without feeling any restrictions Pauline started out shaping around the form of a foot, as if being a sculptress. To her this made the design process very personal, fluent and aesthetic. The forms evolved very naturally and came out of her pencil almost effortlessly; everything was possible! Seeing oneself and surroundings distorted, makes Pauline wonder what is on exhibit here, the object or the space in which it exists — or both. She translated this idea into a concept of a dialogue between the upper part of the shoe and the sole. The shape of the sole is completely surrounded by the upper. In this design reflection and perspective are key elements. Furthermore she wanted to create a clear contrast between the rigid aspect of the wooden sole and the softer, fluid aspect of the upper; sharp edges combined with curves lines. The upper part is made of a high-tech fabric. It has a modern and three dimensional look. In her attempt to create a dialogue she saw that the shoe actually makes people wonder where the foot begins and the sole ends. It makes people wonder how it’s made, how you can walk on it and triggers them to take a closer look and see the piece from different angles.

Women's shoes have long since mutated from clothing to a more fetish and status symbol. To push the non-functionality and non-ability to the extreme, Svenja Ritter has begun to make structures from silver and metal on the inner soles of her high heeld sculptured shoes. So they are also prohibitive and get a very torture character...

Barbie dolls were extremely significant in fueling my creative life as a child. They were controlled and manipulated to fit infinite situations of my choosing. I immersed myself in on-going narratives (complete with elaborate hand-made dwellings) where all my fears, embarrassments, joys and explorations of human interactions could be played out like characters on a stage. An invaluable tool for the expansion of my imagination as a child, ironically, Barbie continues to be such for me as an adult.

Whether you love her or hate her, there are few who feel neutral about the plastic princess. I am fascinated with who she is as a cultural icon, her distinguished celebrity status, and the enormous impact she has had on our society. Specifically, I’m intrigued with her influence in defining gender roles of women in contemporary American culture.

My childhood spent with Barbie cultivated my interest in adornment. Extensive play with the doll and her miniature world strengthened my dexterity: a skill imperative to the art of jewelry making. Hence it feels natural for me to make art on a small scale.

I enjoy the funny juxtaposition of wearing the body, on the body. Barbie has become the accessory instead of being accessorized. I take pleasure in the contrast and contradiction of something mass-produced being transformed into a handmade, wearable piece of art.

Tea Petrovic has designed a collection of shoes based on the work of late Russian sculptor Naum Gabo and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
This shoe collection is centered around the idea that each shoe is an sculptural-architectural structured form. The collection contains ten plastic prototypes entirely handmade. Each model is an experiment with the high heel, since they determine the whole form of a shoe. The heels are columns, constructive elements on which the whole creative process is based with an aim to create a new concept of high heels.
Bernard Figueroa once said: 'There is so much space between a woman's heel and the floor that one can use.', and that is exactly what I tried to accomplish using this space as much as possible.

These shoes are primarily an art object and their function is secondary. The focus is on the form, their only decorative element. Design is based on the exploration of new high heel shapes, resulting in numerous variations of their basic form. To underline their sculptural form, the shoes are kept white, which on the other hand emphasis the artistic language, present in the entire collection.

The 'Icecream Girl', made from nylon, is for sale as a brooch and as a ring at the Ted Noten Atelier in Amsterdam.

Ted Noten takes themes from large format user objects and miniturizes them as  jewellery. He creates installations with large format products and then makes a threedimensional scan. With this modern 'print' technique it's possible to make moulds, to create small nylon clones.

The campaign was inspired by the Tokyo cityscape, which is visually stunning and energetic perfect for Ontisuka Tiger. StrawberryFrog was looking for an idea rather than an individual ad campaign, something that would draw people in and excite them across all media touchpoints. The sculpture has inspired numerous executions from classic print and outdoor, to viral film and retail and even drove the design of new product.

The Electric Light Shoe takes center stage in a StrawberryFrog-produced 30-second animation that takes the viewer on a journey through the sneaker. The film opens in a contemporary Japanese bedroom and from there the viewer is whisked away on a magical journey through the sculpture bustling neon-lit streets, past traffic, metro trains, skyscrapers and cranes. It sweeps to a halt in front of the Electric Light Show leaving the viewer to watch from afar as the city in a sneaker goes about its business [keywords] => [thumbnail] => ElectricTigerLand-t.jpg [p_ids] => ) [thumbnail] => image Object ( [path] => files/ElectricTigerLand-t.jpg [directory] => files [filename] => ElectricTigerLand-t.jpg [path_original] => files/ElectricTigerLand-t.jpg [filename_original] => ElectricTigerLand-t.jpg [web_path] => files/ ) ) [41] => objekt Object ( [table] => object [primkey] => o_id [db] => db_mysql Object ( [host] => [user] => [pass] => [mysql_link] => Resource id #9 ) [fields] => Array ( [o_id] => 1188 [status] => online [object_type] => sculpture [name] => Acryl 1 [year] => 2008 [brand] => [location] => [shoe_type] => high_heels [focus] => toe [colour_backup] => [colour] => FFFFFF [material] => synthetic [usage] => [sex] => [style] => experimental, glamorous [description] =>

Through continuous research on alternative materials, these shoes were designed as another experiment with woven fibres and sculptural wedges.

These pumps are made from woven carbon and kevlar fibres on a wooden wedge with a shiny black coating. There is a gap at the inside arch of the foot going through upper and wedge. From the outside they look like normal pumps, but from the inside the gap is revealed and light is reflected differently on the shiny wedge. What you see is not what you get...

The SWIMS Story

Growing up with four distinct seasons in Norway, I never
let go of the black rubber galoshes that my late grandfather
passed on to me. In 1999 they accompanied me to a milder,
but still rainy Paris. Wearing Chuck Taylor’s Converse
and galoshes, I got around the severe rainfall that autumn.
Not surprisingly, my footwear became the subject of many
jokes around the art school I attended. Later, while living in New York, I blended in with an imageconscius culture that defied slushy streets, freezing winds and pouring rain. Naturally, this resulted in a lot of discomfort and many ruined pairs of shoes.

A few more Manhattan winters went by while I searched
for the right product before I finally took matters in my
own hands and decided to develop SWIMS - The Modern
Galosh! A stylish solution, embodying the essence of practicality: Wear your favorite shoes, slip on SWIMS when
the weather is rough, slip’em off when you arrive at your
destination. Enhanced comfort is assured and your shoes
are guaranteed to stay shiny. The SWIMS galosh is the product of my own experience, my appreciation of functional design, and my odd fascination with big city rain. Enjoy the weather!

The I Ashi Bionicus range is insupired by Bjorks Music
video 'All is full of love' by Chris Cunningham and
the 06/07 trend of Apple I-pods, toyota I-series, I
robot etc.

The concept places emphasis on purity in simplicity
and form through clinical colour and minimal
construction. The exo-skeletal structure is comprised
of 10 pieces of vac formed gloss plastic thus reducing
on conventional toe puffs, counter stiffeners and
requires no lasting. The interior is comprised of
neoprene only exposing a single 1 cm stitch and thus
eliminates conventional fastening, lining and padding,
while the sole is a simple black resin.

As the foot is placed into the shoe, the elasticity of
the neoprene expands the shoe, hence ergonomic seams
in the plastic, and when the foot is fully inside the
shoe, the neoprene tightens retracts around the foot
to fit like a sock. The seams are carefully placed to
allow for movement in key ergonomic areas of the foot
maximizing comfort, flexibility and movement. The
design won the 2006 Linea Pelle Footwear Award in
Milan.

Ophelia (Shakespeare’s Hamlet)
Aside from being one of the greatest poets and theatre’s writers, Shakespeare was also a pioneer of cinema, particularly for its primary root, the screenplay. His “Hamlet” is a clear example of that. We know that the little Ophelia will kill herself in the bed of a creak. As in every kind of performance, being it theatrical, pictorial or cinematographic, she is portrayed well dressed and perfectly make up as if she was going out on a date, not certainly to a rendezvous with Death. There are flowers on her hands and scattered across her clothes. The corpse is settled into water as if someone pitifully wanted to give her a post mortem dignity. The dialogue between the undertakers (the clowns, that in Shakespeare’s theatre bring Death) insinuates the doubt of the presence of a mysterious character, an “hidden2 assassin moving in the neighbourhood of the court or as a scene that has been intentionally cut off to rise up the suspense and the sense of apprehension, as in an Hitchcock or David Lynch’s film. The screenplayer’s job, before that of the director’s is that of catching audiences’ attention through the delicate duties of not giving clues, not explaining and principally not showing. So, the undertakers ask themselves on how weird is to bury a suicidal in consecrated earth and draw the brilliant conclusion “the lady drowned herself for self-defence”. Water is by far the purifier element, it’s the catharsis into which even the blackest assassin can clean his crimes off. In “Psycho”, Norman Bates hides his victim into water, so does the psycopath Jame Gumb in “The silence of the lambs” and in “Twin Peaks” the corpse of Laura Palmer floats in plastic to make her finding possible. The sandal of Ophelia is the one she could be dressing when the corpse free itself from the flesh and skin, and instead of worms and moulds I’d like to imagine flowers, leaves and threads of grass made of beads and slips of PET as natural “product” and consequently, a decoration exhaled by herself.

Leni Berta Helène Amalie Riefensthal

Two women with different and marked destinies, the same historical period. During a dictatorship time as the Nazi Regime, a woman with the passion for the cinema, Leni Riefensthal, benefits of the largest creative freedom as few directors ever had in any other part of the world and time. Photographer, screenwriter, editor and director, with her 'Olympia' she introduced such innovative techniques and style to make her Berlin’s Olympiad documentary one of the biggest cinematographic models ever. Meanwhile, a Jewish girl, Anne Frank, struggled hard days inside a concentration camp, deprived of every sort of freedom and dignity. A diary, which pages were abruptly interrupted and transmitted as sad news until us. I created two opposite sandals, working with the symbology that comes to my memories for their very opposite stories. Leni’s sandal is made of photographic film and it has got a swastika for heels. The crocked cross is the oriental one, that stands for 'universal peace'. This symbol has been re-interpreted by Nazism that applied to the swastika an inclination of 45 degrees for more aggressiveness. The half a swastika symbolized Nazism’s end but it is also the incapability to achieve worldwide peace; the fact that is positioned under the heels of its major artist it is the recovery’s symbol of intellectual freedom. In Anne’s sandal I realized two transparent plastic heels that contained ash, miserable product of lager’s crematories and two sashes made of beads barbed wire, physical and psychological barrier to the freedom of human being.

Lucrezia Borgia
First of all this exhibition talks about the collective imaginary, better all that passing through the filters of mind stays inside with no way out. They are details, memory impressions, anything that hits our imagination with no reversibility. They are common places, not always the truth but popular beliefs brought to us by History, with its mysteries tied to fragmentary and inaccurate sources that we catch in aspects such as legends or itching details, that are the most difficult to unveil. Sometimes happens that the guilts of parents fall upon the children, as for Lucrezia Borgia. She never poisoned anyone, she has never been incestuous, she was just woman of her time, with a father that was a centralizer, a boss, an intrigante and a sanguinary man. A brother, Caesar, that killed her husband (however, chosen by his father) the only one that she was really in love with, Alfonso d’Aragona, for reasons of power. In spite of this, I create her sandal which Is based on what everybody associates to the name of Lucrezia: poison. Her heel is a little vial of poison (before someone realized… actually it is a graduated plastic tube for urine). For this I beg her pardon! Lucrezia was a cultured woman, that perfectly understood different languages. She felt a great reciprocated passion, for Bembo, one of the most famous writers of that time; unfortunately this passion is not enough to change her reputation. Lucrezia had artistic skills and her verses, preserved among the manuscripts of the Ambrosian, prove it.

Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn has died. Suicidal.
She is gone to bed wearing some drops of Chanel n.5 and some tubes of barbiturics in her stomach. She maybe killed herself for self-defence as Ophelia or, perhaps, someone killed her and made up a dramatic scene of suffering and inability to resist to the star doom’s pressure. I just know that together with Monna Lisa she is an universal icon, a sort of holy picture, a cyclic representation that I have seen and I will see, as everybody, everywhere. So, she’s never died, and nobody killed her, or, if they did, by killing Marilyn they granted her eternal life. It’s sure that one associates the word “Marilyn” to these random images: Happy Birthday Mr. President, JFK, Andy Warhol, the white pleated skirt that lift up on the grill, suicide, barbiturics and who knows what else. Her heel is the emblem of an unsolved American case: a tube of “Goodnight America”.

For this project I drew my inspiration from my three major passions: shoes, architecture and Milan.

I created the ‘City Walker’ concept: a 3D city map is literally wrapped around the foot on a simple sandal. In 2006, the 'City Walker Milan' was born. Inspired by the skylines of the greatest cities, the idea is to promote urban life and to connect people all over the world through the shoes they wear. Each city has its own model and each foot represents a different part of the city map. The idea is to add more cities and different models each season.

Onitsuka Tiger

The astonishing Tiger story The history of Onitsuka Tiger began with the establishment of Onitsuka Co. Ltd. in 1949. Based on the philosophy of bringing up sound youth through sports, the company has maintained the tradition of specializing in the manufacturing of sports shoes using original ideas and applying epoch-making techniques. As the Japanese people recovered from the war and began to appreciate the benefits of sports, Onitsuka Tiger shoes were on their feet. The first basketball shoes in Japan had a tiger face design on the arch of the foot and this became Onitsuka's trademark. In the 1960's, Onitsuka Tiger sports shoes were worn not only by the Japanese, but also by top foreign athletes.

Ayse (the name of the girl) fled to her lover with this shoe...

Part of the 'Dowry Trunk Collection-Wedding Shoes, a journey to the past – hopes and memories', 2003-2004

This shoe collection tells stories and reflects memories of a girl's engagement or wedding state. The stamp in the shoe is the mark or the name of the 'usta' (the shoe master).

The inspiration for my collection comes from my aunt's wedding shoes which she used to keep since I was a child. In the old days the masters made personal shoes for these occasions and wrote their signatures of course. Besides a wedding shoe for each woman is symbolic and full with hopes and rich memories...

Shamanism is a complicated system, where everything has its deep meaning and aim. Shaman's costume symbolizes the animal protector-spirit. In the region of Far-Baikal, most often you can find deer symbol. Sahaas need the deer costume for healing, but also for journeys to the upper- and underworld. Duck is one of the most important helpers of a shaman, as it can dive underwater feeling at home both in the underworld and the upperworld – in the air.
(Michaly Hoppal 'Śamaanid Aasias ja Euroopas')

Neon-deer boots and shaman-duck shoes were inspired of Northern nation´s shamanism traditions. In order to gain more power the shamans used to wear shoes which imitated the animal´s foot whos protection they were seeking. This idea was modernized and coloured into magical neon colour.

Shaman-deer boots platform sole and heel leave behind footsteps of a deer, in this way representing the shamanic deer protector-spirit, who is supposed to help the wearer of the boots. The duck footprint-shaped platform and merest thin heel leave the impression of a duck footprints when walking on soft wet ground.

In 2004 the 'Shaman duck' shoes got the 5th place in the lady's shoes category of the 'Lapiz de Oro' shoe design competition in Elda, Spain and were exhibited in the Elda shoe museum.

When men were men and a cuppa coffee cost a penny. And John Fluevog was a strapping young man with a glorious future. Here, you'll find artifacts of that future, now distant past. Or, passed. Whatever. These wonders have long vanished into the ether (meaning they're, like, totally unavailable, so don't even think it), but they live on, in our hearts. In fact, we know that many of your closets and attics hold rare treasures of Fluevog History. Whether they're shoes, accessories, old marketing materials or related items we didn't even make, it's all welcome. Send your photos and stories to info@fluevog.com and, if they fit the bill, you'll see 'em in the Flueseum!

Virtual Shoe Museum : Synthetic
Home of the Virtual Show Museum

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.

And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...

If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.

The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.

On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
