[txt] => Paper is thin material used for writing upon, printing upon or packaging, produced by the amalgamation of fibres, typically vegetable fibers composed of cellulose, which are subsequently held together by hydrogen bonding. While the fibres are usually natural in origin, a wide variety of synthetic fibres, such as polypropylene and polyethylene, may be incorporated into paper as a way of imparting desirable physical properties. The most common source of these kinds of fibres is wood pulp from pulpwood trees. Vegetable fibre materials such as cotton, hemp, linen, and rice are also used.

[description] => Dolorosa
Stylist Cynthia Altoriso: 'I always loved your black mule ever since I saw it on your foot at Marie Antoinette party that I did. As a matter of fact, I was haunted by it's beauty.
When Vintage magazine booked me to set the 'funeral dinner' table to illustrate the story on France's first food critic, Alexandre Grimod, circa 18th century, a bell went off.
Though the editor only wanted the table, I asked her if I could arrange for some 'detail' shots. I knew that Grimod, despite his infirmity, was popular with the ladies and had a mistress.
Though the magazine did not want to bring in any people for the 'funeral dinner' set, I wanted to at least suggest the presence of guests. The most important guest would be Grimod's mistress. I wanted to have her foot peeking out from beneath the table so that her presence would be somewhat ephemeral...
I know you have names for all of your girls and you offered me to come up with a name.'
The name 'Dolorosa' is a derivative of Dolores and you know how I love my 'secrets and connections to the stories that I do... Dolorosa means sadness, grief... we get the word 'dolorous' from it which means pain, sorrow, mourning....
The purple macaroon at her foot was from the funeral dinner."

[description] => In Italian scarpa means shoe while 'arpa' is the harp... Combined this makes 'scArpa'. It should be a 'somptous shoe' so I decided to fill it with lace and decorate it as a real harp.
Fancy walking with the sound of a gostly air that crosses and moves the strings of the heels...

[description] => Part of the Collection 'The Manifestation Of Glee'
Giving form to the intangible
The Manifestation Of Glee, the name pretty much says it all. It can be referred to as and eye vitamin if you will, but The Manifestation Of Glee is not just some placebo effect. It truly works. It’s fun, happy, joyful, to be honest, it’s just good for you. It’s origins goes back to the bare essentials of the creative spirit. The conception of ever idea, where the first spark of creativity is ignited and leads to something beautiful and tangible. The goal is to capture this explosive, illusive moment of gleeful, giddiness, bottle it and share it with the happy masses.
The Manifestation Of Glee can be described as happy fashion for the serious fashion lover. This translates into a culmination of vivid colours and unpredictable patterns leading to an unexpected yet cheerful end result. Because of a interdisciplinary mix of Graphic elements, Typography, Illustration and fashion it is sure to tickle the most deeply buried funny bone.

[description] => Big Blahnik Girl
The poster image for the Dutch literature festival 'Het Voorwoord' (the preface), with as theme 'The Human Zoo' features a pig wearing ultramarin/turqouise/purple Blahniks. I'm not so sure she's actually wearing them: after drawing the pig halfway, leaving the feet (paws) unfinished, I replaced the toes with - quickly googled- blahniks. She is standing on shoes without having feet. Maybe she is dreaming herself Blahniks as a means of materialising her great and gracious and light-weight self-experience right that moment. Who knows. We all have an appearance on the outside and an inner self-experience which don't necessarily pair. This huge, pink, voluptuous lady is a star for now. After finishing the drawing another thing stroke me: she has a kind of Virgin Mary-look in her eyes as we see in paintings, a virgin look all-over, that actually does not at all match her shoes. High heels are not for good girls. But hers are blue: the virgin's colour.

[description] => Poster for Border Kitchen 'Bella Italia' by Milena Agus & Davide Longo. For this summer Sunday afternoon BorderKitchen (14-06-2009) we have invited two young and talented authors to discuss their work as writers and their newest novels.
Milena Agus was born in Genoa to Sardinian parents and now lives in Cagliari where she teaches Italian and History. Madame Agnese (translated into Dutch by Jeanne Crijns) is the third novel by the hand of this young author who was the literary surprise of 2007 in Italy and an instant international hit with her novel Mal di Pietra. Her stories are original, unartificial and almost naive but clearly show her capacity to cross the boundaries of reality. Milena Agus won the 2008 City of Rome Literary Prize.
Davide Longo was born in Carmagnola near Turin where he still lives today. For his first novel Un mattino a Irgalem (translated into Dutch by Pieter van der Drift) he received the Grinzane Cavour Prize and the Premio Via Po for the best debut in Italy. His second novel Il mangiatore di pietre was awarded the Premio nazionale di narrativa Bergamo and the Premio Viadana. Longo is also an author of children's books, short films and documentaries, his documentary Memorie dell'altoforno was screened at the Young Cinema festival in Turin.

[description] => Finland post stamp, released on May 6th 2009.
Minna Parikka’s red high heels (Starlet) can be seen on one of the stamps of the Fashion miniature sheet. They are accompanied by beautiful shoes by Julia Lundsten. Lundsten’s stylish signature wooden heels have won the admiration even of the king of shoe designers, Manolo Blahnik, who has called them “divine” and “perfect”. The wooden-heeled pump shown on the stamp is made of fish skin. Lundsten’s creations are sold in Tokyo, London, New York and other great cities. The miniature sheet features elegant accessories in the form of the Lumi handbag designed by Sanna Kantola. Sanna Kantola and Bruno Beaugrand founded the Lumi brand in New York nine years ago, and today Lumi bags are sold in 25 countries.
Fashion designer Jasmin Santanen lives and works in Paris. This spring she unveiled at the Paris fashion festival a luxurious open party outfit, which has now been immortalised on a stamp.
This year’s spring collection also includes an outfit designer by Tuomas Laitinen and his sister, artist Anna Laitinen, the rear view of which is shown on the Fashion miniature sheet. This angle was chosen because of the outfit’s amusing “penguin cut”. A collection by the Laitinens won shared first place in the prestigious French Hyères fashion design competition in France in 2006. Today the LAITINEN accessory brand is sold in France, Japan, Hong Kong and elsewhere. The woman in purple on the left-hand edge of the miniature sheet is a filler picture. Laura Laine produced the illustrations for the miniature sheet.

When the elegance of typography meets the extravagance of fashion, it gives Alfashion. Alfashion is a stiletto typeface inspired by the surrealist game 'Exquisite Corpse' (Cadavre Exquis). The game is played as a group of players, each player adding a piece to a design, one at a time. Each participant ignores what the others are adding to the design.
The combination of unexpected or mismatching shapes creates a new design, an hybrid of fashion and typography.

[description] => Cinderella beats, The Hague 09.08
On a small stage near the city centre, two friends (percussion, sax) performed with a New York beat poet. It was a sunny, warm and blue sky afternoon outside, and in the dark backroom she did an apocalyptic poem about New York breaking down, panic and the end of the world as we know it.
The best thing about it were her perspex stiletto's: what prince would wish and dare kiss this angry afro Cinderella?

Arntz’s clear-cut style suited Neurath’s goals perfectly, and so he invited the young artists to come to Vienna in Gerd Arntz designed around 4000 signs, which symbolized key data from industry, demographics, politics and economy, for the visual language Isotype.
This informative and educational website is initiated by Ontwerpwerk design bureau and is realized in close cooperation with Peter Arntz, son of Gerd Arntz, and the Municipal Museum of The Hague, administrator of the Gerd Arntz archive.

[description] => Not with your shoes in the bed!
Our family wears shoes in the house as part of being civilized. My neighbours downstairs leave their shoes outside on the doorstep for the same reason. Animal skin tied to your feet in order to be civilized and human, or as a shield to protect your body and home from unhuman dirt. When visiting my parents, they sometimes seem so much in work-mode, I imagine they will forget to take their shoes off when going to bed. But even so, never with your shoes in the bed! Civilization doesn't fall asleep when you do. This is a drawing from the 2008 Dutch literature festival 'Het Voorwoord' booklet, with 'on old people and things passing-by' for a theme.

Cees always dresses in jeans, T-shirt and jacket on top of big sturdy boots that add to his casual appearance a Crocodile Dundee-credibility. We were waiting in a lobby, I drew his boots and he entrusted me that he only has one real pair of boots. All others do look like cowboy boots but are in fact no more than ankle-high. Not half as tough - but twice as comfortable.

Joss paper, as well as other paper-mâché items, are also burned in traditional Chinese funerals, to ensure that spirit of the deceased has lots of good things in the afterlife.
More contemporary or westernized varieties of Joss paper include Hell Bank Notes, paper credit cards, cheques, as well as papier-mâché clothes, houses, cars, ans even shoes. The designs on paper items vary from the very simple to very elaborate, with custom artwork and names(source wikipedia).

Alice in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll's novel 'Alice in Wonderland'; represents the metaphor from childhood to puberty with its exciting discovers, fears and contrasting emotions. Alice is still a child when she passes through the mirror and enters a fairytale world but that actually hides, although not so well, deception and dangerous realities. During her fantastic journey, Alice will find some characters more appropriate to mental homes, she will eat mushrooms with properties more similar to narcotics than magical, she’ll hear some nonsense speeches worthy the theatre of the absurd and she will risk to be beheaded several times by the hand of a despot and hysterical queen reigning over the fear of her subjects. Following ferocious political satires and happenings far from what the gilded world of childhood should be, the author, best known in his private life for some particular weird interest to children, leaves some clues of perversion and refinement that will be understood only later. Many fairytales of the past used to hide subliminal messages and some 20 years ago cartoons transmitted not much reassuring values: nowadays the situation is not that better; if, in a way, there is more attention not to show death as a spectacle, on the other hand cartoons are nothing but a marketing product treated for supporting the setting of the correlated merchandise, identifying children as very precocious consumer’s target.'Alice's sandal is the one that she could be wearing at the end of the novel, when she says to the Queen of Hearts a just: ';Stop it! Who do you think you are? You’re nothing but the queen of a pack if cards!'; Alice grew up, she is no more scared as now she is self-conscious. She steps on the queen’s card; with its tinged cruelty this story teaches us that life is circular and that it takes a second to switch from losers to winners, from victims to executioners, from the dead to the living.'

[description] => Commissioned by the Faversham Society in 2004 to commemorate Faversham’s shoemaking history and the Saint Crispin legend. The starting point for the work was a pair of shoes belonging to Pope John Paul II, given to the Vigevano Museum – Saints Crispin and Crispinian Consortium, Italy. These red shoes inspired me to research other ‘red shoes’ with a history. Hans Christian Andersen and, of course, the 1948 film starring Moira Shearer portrays the ‘Red Shoes’ as the story of a contemporary ballerina. In the 1939 film the Wizard of Oz Glinda’s magic wand moves the shin red shoes from the Wicked Witch of the East to Dorothy’s feet, who then skips along the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Karen sacrificed her feet, Moira Shearer’s character sacrificed love and
the Wicked Witch of the East is sacrificed for the red shoes. The papal connection is the Eucharist commemorating Christ’s sacrifice and, of course, the Saint Crispin legend is all about sacrifice and shoes. A tenuous link maybe and the ‘red shoe’ as an icon, maybe not, but shoes symbolise historical changes across time and across cultures and will continue to do so for as long as we have feet and a need to use them.
Red Shoe consists of:
Red shoes: 14 cm long x 5 cm wide x 3 cm high
Dorothy’s shoes: 8 cm long x 3 cm wide x 6 cm high
Pope Shoes: 22 cm long x 7 cm wide x 4 cm high
All the shoes are made from ‘hemp’ paper, coated with guache. Dorothy’s shoes dusted with a fine coat of glitter. All mounted on 3cm deep canvases, secured with thread and buttons.

Part of the 'Dowry Trunk Collection-Wedding Shoes, a journey to the past – hopes and memories', 2003-2004
This shoe collection tells stories and reflects memories of a girl's engagement or wedding state. The stamp in the shoe is the mark or the name of the 'usta' (the shoe master).
The inspiration for my collection comes from my aunt's wedding shoes which she used to keep since I was a child. In the old days the masters made personal shoes for these occasions and wrote their signatures of course. Besides a wedding shoe for each woman is symbolic and full with hopes and rich memories...

[description] => Fetish carrier bag is a product from ComuniStar designers, a young brand from Slovakia which creates unique contemporary designer furniture and interior accessories. Our mission is to create conditions for development and realisation of european design authorship, which will contribute to the building of cultural heritage of Central Europe. We use ideal regional technological and productional conditions for production of all designs. We are looking for own design language and identity, not seeking to follow the global mainstream. Questions like ecology, tradition, and social groups will not be suppressed by the dictation of what is currently trendy. ComuniStar has the ambition to become the commissary of a new original design identity from the former eastern block countries/from Central Europe.

[description] => ‘Ashes of roses’ was inspired by the 1727 - 1747 church records of St Mary’s Church, Chichester. In this piece the shoes represent the past and the future, mother and child, with intertwined laces acting as a link. When the lid is taken off the box, footsteps are retraced and memories unfold like the petals of a rose.
‘Ashes of roses’ completed 2001 consists of 280 30 cm x 30 cm boxes each containing two pairs of intertwined shoes with a garland of 23 roses.

[description] => For this project, I looked into the aesthetics and way of destroying, denting, cutting things, in order to come to new (silhouette) forms. The boot is a slip on boot and the front of the boot is distorted. Normally a slip on boot is very straight at the back so your foot can slide into the boot. The way I have cut the pattern makes it possible to make the back hug the calf and the leg. At the moment I am looking into the way of producing this material, tyvek, in a three-dimensional mould, so stitches will not be necessary anymore.

Part of the 'Shoes Or No Shoes' collection, a project developed over the course of the past 20 years by a Belgian couple of shoemakers, Pierre Bogaerts and Veerle Swenters. They decided to make a connection between their profession and art by means of collecting the shoes of famous artists. Many of these artists transformed their shoes into an artwork or donated a drawing or a painting involving shoes or feet. The SONS-museum includes a contribution of Arman, Baselitz, Fabre, Kabakov, Kippenberger, Oldenburg, Richter, Wesselman … among many others. The permanent exhibition is located in Kruishoutem - Belgium.

[description] => In 2000 I saw a documentary about the Royal College of Art on BBC2 that focused on a course called Design Products. There was an artist on the course and the projects seemed to be very conceptual, ideas based, so I decided to apply.
When I walked into the interview room there were about six people standing around a table looking at my sketchbooks. A man said ’show me your shoes, show me your shoes!’ This confused me at first but later I learned that he was refering to a drawing in my sketchbook (shown above). This man turned out to be Ron Arad, a famous designer and architect. Luckily I was accepted on the course based on this and my other sketched ideas.

[description] => Cygnets was made for an Argentinean ‘tango’ dancer in 1998. The child sized ballet slippers commemorate how, as a child, she felt rhythm in her toes as she stood on her father’s feet whilst he danced.
Cygnets consists of 6 pairs of ballet slippers, pearlised. Completed in 1998.
Each shoe size is 14 cm long x 5 cm wide x 3 cm high, excluding laces.

In stiletto I was seduced by the shape of the shoe, the height of the heel, the curve of the arch. Some shoes are never worn, others worn only These shoes tell the story of our lives – the dance danced, the dream dreamt.
Stiletto consists of 500 pairs of shoes in handmade ‘abaca’ paper, originated in 1996 the final pair made in 2002.
Average size of individual shoe (sizes vary) 1cm long x 7cm wide x 14cm high

[description] => Ma Gouvernante - My Nurse - Mein Kindermädchen.
Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985) was an important surrealist Swiss painter and sculptor. In 1936 Oppenheim exhibited Ma Gouvernante made of a pair of shoes bound together on a platter in a position simulating that of a nude woman on her back with her legs spread and dressed with paper frills. The shoes caused as a lot of excitement. This pair of shoes was distroyed, but a new pair was made in 1967 when Moderna Museet made an Oppenheim show.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.

Paper is thin material used for writing upon, printing upon or packaging, produced by the amalgamation of fibres, typically vegetable fibers composed of cellulose, which are subsequently held together by hydrogen bonding.
