Samira Boon

BOONDESIGN, established by Samira Boon, is a Tokyo-based product, textile, and interior design studio. Central to the design process is the relationship between user and object/space. Products are not seen as final and fixed, but are adaptable according to circumstance or the wishes of the user. This flexibility creates an active relationship between user and object. Minimalism and simplicity characterise the work, which while inspired by traditional objects for daily use in Asian culture, are transformed with contemporary styling. The different features and character of each product necessitate a range of materials and techniques. As these are developed, design and material use influence each other in both directions. The products are on sale in numerous shops around Japan, Europe and the USA (e.g., MOMA in NY). BOONDESIGN also works on assignments for museum and art shops, including The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and Nadiff. Interior and exterior spaces have been designed for and in collaboration with ADK Japan Real Estate. BOONDESIGN works have been featured in various fashion/design magazines, focusing on and emphasising a fresh attitude towards traditional and daily use objects. Samira Boon was born in the Netherlands. After graduating with a Masters degree in architecture from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands in 2002, she was granted a Monbusho Research Student Scholarship for 18 months at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, architecture department. Meanwhile she founded BOONDESIGN.
