Matthias Winkler

Matthias Winkler is a non binary, post-avant-garde footwear brand based in Berlin.

All shoes are handcrafted, using traditional techniques and dormant resources – such as machinery, leather garments and dead stock, making the production process sustainable. Wanting to breach the fast driven fashion, cycle Matthias Winkler presents a single collection a year. This allows for the creation of unique, high quality objects.

Matthias Winkler graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and worked as an artist for some years, before graduating from the Royal College of Art in Footwear Design. His work experience in the fashion industry ranges from designing in Haute couture and avant-garde, to work for socially responsible shoe design brands. Growing up in Austria in a family of hunters Matthias Winkler was surrounded by garments and leather goods that were longlasting and of high craftsmanship. He wanted to translate these qualities into an artistic visual language of tomorrow, using the same artistry, enhancing the unity of wearer and nature. The dichotomy of his homeland mountains and Berlin’s complex urban architecture with its stories and what they evoke, determine Matthias Winkler’s distinctive design language.
