Flamingo/Hedgehog

Alice van Opstal

Part of the collection ‘The war against reality’, for the Academy of Fine Arts in Sint-Niklaas Belgium (SASK), 2017.

Inspired by a theater piece by Abattoir Fermé based on Lewis Carroll’s story Alice in Wonderland.

Chapter: Queen’s croquet field: ‘The biggest difficulty, as Alice found out, was the handling of her flamingo.’

Of all shoes, this is perhaps the most explicitly recognizable source of inspiration. The flamingo is depicted in the pink color, the plumes and the high curvy leg. At the front it is the hedgehog texture and the black color that attracts attention. The use of extremely high heels is also significant, make possible what seems impossible.
An understatement of sadism is also a frequently recurring theme in the story of Alice, in this theater piece and in my collection.
